Our Growing Season

Our region of the country has a medium-long growing season, with enough time to allow most vegetables to ripen effectively. You can expect a frost-free growing season since the last frost typically happens in mid- to late-April and a first frost occurs in early- to mid-October. Though temperatures can vary drastically throughout the year, the average low can be as cold as 5 degrees, so it’s best to start your growing season with seeds indoors, and then as the warmth of summer spreads, transplant those vegetables to your garden. At Mayo Garden Center, we offer a large inventory of quality seeds, flowers, and fertilizers to help you with your growing goals. Call or visit our stores in Knoxville today to find out more.

Vegetable Planting By Season

There are plenty of great vegetables you can plant throughout the season, and we carry all the best seeds you’ll need to get started. We recommend specific vegetables be planted during specific months to achieve best results.

Our growing calendar includes:
February–April: Grow greens like kale, lettuce, Brussels sprouts, celery, peas, and broccoli.
May–July: Grow veggies/fruit such as cabbage, potatoes, tomatoes, eggplants, squash, melons, corn and beans.
August–October: Veggies like spinach, broccoli, beets, and carrots are best.

Of course, many of these vegetables and fruits overlap and your specific area and soil type may favor one vegetable or fruit over another. We’re happy to help you find the right vegetable and plant growth for your property, and we’ll ensure you get your supplies for the lowest possible price. When you want expert gardening guidance and quality seeds for a fair price, Mayo Garden Center is your one-stop shop.
